Open House at New Arts and Education Center in Old Bayview School

New Office Location on Whidbey Island

The Whidbey GeoDome and New Stories have moved into a new arts and education center that was formerly the Bayview School.  Last Fall, the Bayview School was rented by several non-profits with the intention of creating a collaborative work space and art/education center open to the public.  Whidbey GeoDome and New Stories joined with WICEC (Whidbey Island Community Education Center) and The art Center@WICEC, NILA (National Institute for Literary Arts)  in remodeling and updating the space.

Now the work is done and we are ready for the reveal.  Saturday April 27th from 10-3 we will co-host an open house showcasing all we will have to offer the community.  The GeoDome will be open to the public for the day in one of the newly remodeled classrooms showcasing our Earth Portal production and live tours of the Universe.  NILA will host author and poet readings and WICEC will have class and workshop demos throughout the day including a 3-D printer demo and Tai Chi. During the open house, The art Center@WICEC will also provide Encaustic painting demonstration and a local art show on display.

From 6-8 pm The art Center@WICEC will host a gallery opening and reception for new and up and coming local artists.  WICEC has created The art Center@WICEC which has lead the revitalization of the art studio space which will serve as the classroom for WICEC artist workshops. The GeoDome will also be present from 6-8 for a personal tour of our new office and productions spaces.  Refreshments and snacks will be provided.  Come by and meet the crew.

What would it take for us to shift from anywhere eating to local eating? Resilient communities and resourceful people are transforming the way food is sourced, cooked and eaten so we can assure safe, fresh, fair, plentiful and nourishing food for all – however the political, energy and climate winds blow. This shift from industrial to relational eating, though, will rattle many structures: our preferences and habits, our disconnection from community, our social agreements about money and property and more. In her forthcoming book, Blessing the Hands that Feed Us Vicki shares her adventures in hyper local eating and explores how “local food” can scale up to make a difference in the big question of “How do we feed 9 billion people”?

Vicki Robin’s book, Your Money or Your Life, was a NY Times bestseller in the 1990s and continues – 20-years later – to be a seminal book on frugality, simplicity and sustainable living. She is a sought after keynote speaker, workshop leader and guide, and is enthusiastic about this new focus on local food. Vicki is also part of Comedy Island, an improv and sketch comedy group on Whidbey Island where she lives with her cat and a lot of very cool friends.

In the unique setting of the Earth Portal Exhibit, Michael Dowd and Connie Barlow, “America’s evolutionary evangelists,” will discuss the leading edge of meaningful and inspiring interpretations of science — specifically our current collective intelligence about “big history, death, and human nature.”  Since April 2002, Michael and Connie have travelled North America and spoken to more than 1,600 secular and religious audiences — from evangelicals to atheists. They will also discuss the challenges and opportunities they have encountered in America for promoting “religious naturalism” — that is, a fully evidential worldview that ignites a passion for life, an honoring of death, and practical tools for joyfully navigating modern challenges.
